Perhaps many parents dream of having a prodigy child who has a genius IQ and graduates from college while still in grade school. While this is a rare event, there are many children who excel as students and are able to reach far above their grade levels. This may bring a sense of pride to their parents, but should also cause some serious reflection about their lifestyle.
Careful School Selection
If a middle school child can be placed in a normal school situation, and given the addition of a special advanced class or two, they may do better socially. For younger children, the Montessori preschool Redmond WA parents prefer may be of great help. At any age, the child will do better if placed with similar students and maturity levels.
Just because a child can calculate math with the grown-ups, that doesn’t mean they have the same maturity level. Care should be taken to encourage play dates with same-aged children for a good social experience. Give them the same choices as other children as to the clothes they wear, the play park they prefer and even the toys they prefer.
Allow your child to be a child and don’t require perfection. Let them express themselves creatively through finger painting, coloring, or shaping some play clay. Let them explore interlocking brick toys or grow crystals or seahorses. Creativity can have a relaxing and settling effect on the fragile nerves and moodiness that can come with brilliance.
Even a genius needs to get a good night’s sleep to keep their mind refreshed and to store the knowledge of the day in a usable fashion. Enforce bedtimes, bath time, and tooth brushing. Make some age-appropriate rules about cleaning up after themselves, helping with family chores and caring for a household pet.
Even with all of the amazing things your child may achieve academically, let them know that it is they themselves that you love and are proud of. Treat them as normally as possible for their age and allow them to be who they are meant to be.
