 race description, disciplines & distances
The Toad Hollow Wilderness Adventure Duathlon is unlike any other adventure race you may have done before - that is, unless you have actually done the Toad Hollow Enhanced Wilderness Adventure Duathlon!

Why?

  • Toad Hollow: named for a feature on the map
  • Enhanced: Because running and mountain biking are just not enough - we will throw some stuff at you that you may have never seen before (and may hope to never see again!
  • Wilderness: the steep and rugged terrain of southern Ohio
  • Adventure: because AMBUSH means ADVENTURE!!!
  • Duathlon: primarily a hike & bike event
Chillicothe is only minutes from your location.
Columbus 48 miles
Cincinnati 112 miles
Dayton 82 miles
Cleveland 190 miles
Athens 68 miles
Zanesville 85 miles
With the convenient 10:00am START time, there's no reason you can't make it down and back in a single day
This is a TIMED event. Competitors will have 6 hours to visit as many checkpoints and complete as many special mystery events as they can. Racers have their choice of foot travel or bike travel, but a good score will require at least a little bit of each. There are more checkpoints than any one team can possibly hope to visit, so an effective strategy is a MUST. Racers visit the checkpoints in any order and can return to the START/FINISH at any time to swap gear or resupply.

Although this is a dual-sport event, and to be competitive, racers will have to do at least a little of each, it can be completed entirely on foot for those that choose not to ride. All of the special navigation challenges are within easy reach of the START/FINISH and will serve to really sharpen your nav skills if that's what you're looking for.

Although very competitive at the front, this event is perfect for beginners as the freestyle navigation ensures that you don't have to bite off more than you can chew - you simply try to visit as many CPs as you can in the six hours and then return to the finish at the same time as everyone else.

 team composition
Solos are allowed, but some of the special mystery events may be hard to do by yourself, so we encourage you to find a teammate or two (or three) and team up to maximize your fun. Besides that...there are discounts for team entries - what more could you ask for!!!

 prizes & awards
Since everyone finishes at the same time, we have the opportunity for a great picnic and awards presentation after the race. That's the best part for many folks and a good opportunity to meet other athletes to train or race with in the coming season.

The top three teams in each category with more than 5 teams entered will receive discounted race entries to other Ambush adventure races later this year. In addition, there may be special awards to recognize outstanding achievement (such as fastest splits, best foot-O score, etc.)...depends what kind of sponsors come through for us.

 required gear
  • Bike & helmet
Although we strive to keep the list of adventure racing gear to a minimum, that doesn't mean that a bike & helmet is all you should bring. You should carry whatever you need to feel safe and comfortable given the race description and potentially unstable weather conditions. This may include:
  • Hydration pack (ie. Camelbak) & plenty of water (or water purification kit)
  • bike repair kit, pump and spare tubes
  • compass & map case
  • Extra clothing, windbreaker, fleece
  • First aid kit, small knife, emergency space blanket, whistle
  • Energy bars, gel or snacks

 skills certifications
There are NO skills certifications required for this race.

Some of the navigation may be 'advanced', but because of the race format, you will have the option of skipping anything you feel is beyond your ability level. Likewise with the riding - some of the trails are fairly technical, and in the past have been quite muddy and unrideable, but you always have the option of riding the gravel roads or visiting any of the checkpoints on foot if the conditions are beyond your skill level.

 maps
Maps will be of a variety of types and scales suitable for the adventure race. They are premarked with checkpoint locations and it will not be necessary to plot CP locations from UTMs. You will be issued your maps 60 minutes before the start (at 09:00) so you can plan your route.
