 camping & accomodations
Free primitive camping at the race START/FINISH beginning Friday eve at 18:00. And by primitive, we mean no electricity or running water and very minimal toilet facilities. Families are welcome, but quite honestly it is not really suitable for younger children and most wives are not going to find it very comfortable.

Nearest motels (15 min from start) are at the KY 801/I-64, with a better variety at the Morehead exit of I-64 (KY 32)

The USFS operates two campgrounds, Twin knobs and Zilpo. Twin Knobs is closer. Please make arrangement directly with the campgrounds if you wish to stay there.

PLEASE NOTE:
Camping at the START/FINISH is primitve and there is NO RUNNING WATER. We will have limited supplies and you are advised to bring your own.

 arrival instructions
  • Drop your boat near the gate by the sign marked 'boat drop'
    • You will probably want to secure your boat in some fashion. Take the time before you leave for the race to figure out how to use a bicycle cable and lock to chain your boat to a tree
  • Pick a spot anywhere near the administration tent to set up your gear.
    • Short course competitors will return to this area only once - at the transition from paddling to biking. (Long course competitors may return to the 'hash house' as often as they like to rest and resupply)
  • Check-in with volunteers at the administration tent and sign a waiver
  • LONG COURSE:
A pre-race briefing will begin at 09:00 and last approx. 15 minutes, leaving you plenty of time to plot your route. You will NOT be required to plot CPs from UTMs.
    SHORT COURSE:
A pre-race briefing will begin at 15:30 and last approx. 15 minutes. You will have a few minutes after the briefing to 'fine-tune' your preparations.

 mandatory gear
  • Bike & helmet
    • bike lights and/or headlights
    • You do not need to have dedicated bike mounted bike lights, but the trails can be rather technical and without adequate light you may be travelling quite slowly after dark.
  • Canoe or kayak, PFD and paddle
    • Rental boats will be prestaged with paddles and PFDs. You may use you own if you wish, including kayak paddles in a canoe.
  • Climbing harness & descender
    • prefer ATC but Fig 8 is acceptable
    • You may wear your bike helmet in lieu of a climbing helmet
